Laboratory Manager – Director

Newcomer Supply is a medical supply company based in Middleton, WI.  We contribute to the health care industry by manufacturing and distributing products for histology and pathology laboratories throughout the country.   As we grow our key business functions and expand our footprint into histology and pathology services, Newcomer Supply requires a laboratory manager.  This position will be a key part of the management team, responsible for ensuring the company continues to expand and evolve towards success.  In this position you will be in dynamic relation to all histology related company functions.

Newcomer Supply is committed to investing in our future.  Within the next few months, a key part of that investment plan will materialize.  By the end of 2024 our business operations will relocate to a new 35,000 sq/ft facility in Waunakee, WI.  Designed to meet our specific requirements the new 5,000 sq/ft histology laboratory is optimized to be ideal for histological workflow and technician experience.   This position is a key part of the laboratory transition team, ensuring the new laboratory is fully functional without business disruption.

The primary responsibility of the laboratory manager is to ensure that the laboratory meets operational goals.  Technicians are trained to meet or exceed company quality standards.  Training and competency programs are maintained and adaptive.  Ensuring all laboratory workflow processes meet defined quality control standards.  As our largest department, the laboratory, represents the most direct and indirect reports.  Control slide operations are from 6:00 am to 11:00 pm covering two shifts, supervisors, lead technicians, and level I and II technicians.

This position is responsible for managing the development, implementation, and operations of our histology services division.  In this role you will be instrumental in creating the newest part of our company.  Responsible for strategic decision making, customer acquisition, workflow optimization, and on-time fulfillment.

In support of all laboratory functions and staff the laboratory manager is responsible for ensuring the facility and procedures are compliant with regulatory / certification requirements.  That the laboratory and staff meet or exceed company and government safety standards.

Job Type:

Education:
Required, bachelor’s degree in biological or clinical laboratory science.
Preferred, master’s degree in health administration or laboratory related technical subjects.
Required, HT (ASCP) or HTL (ASCP) certifications.

 

Experience:
10 years histology experience
10 years laboratory management experience

 

Responsibilities:

    • Manage all histology laboratory workflows to include control slide production, histology service, training, safety, and regulatory/compliance teams.
    • Ensuring control slide production meets operational requirements over two shifts and 18 hours of operation. To include, oversight of technician performance, current and future staffing planning, coordination with management towards meeting all product fulfillment goals.
    • Improve and maintain our laboratory training program for full time, part time, and intern technicians. Ensure that all technicians are trained to meet or exceed company competency standards.   Responsibility for validation training standards and updating documentation as needed.
    • Ensure laboratory procedures and work instructions are maintained and procedural deviations are identified, discussed, and managed accordingly.
    • Successful project management. Effectively and efficiently lead staff, inter department teams through simple and complex projects with clearly defined goals, expectations, and deadlines.
    • Subject expert in all laboratory compliance, regulatory, and safety policies and procedures. Ensuring all documentation is up to date, staff are fully trained, retrained, and the department is audit prepared.  Regulatory oversight includes but is not limited to FDA, OSHA, GLP, CLIA, CAP.
    • Integrate with the entire company structure. To include customer service, technical support, sales, marketing, warehouse, information technology, and upper management.  This position requires a working knowledge of almost all company functions and staff.  This position is responsible for maintaining and improving inter departmental communications, efficiencies, and problem solving.
    • Along with key stakeholders build, manage, and grow histology services offerings. This is to include incorporating services workflows alongside control slide production.  Ensuring all chains of custody and quality standards are maintained at the highest standards.  That customer fulfillment and satisfaction meet or exceed expectations.
    • Identify future equipment needs in addition to, maintenance, cleaning, and repair of all laboratory equipment.
    • Manage laboratory inventory accurately.
    • Travel representing the company as needed at industry conferences. As educational opportunities are presented, provide self-authored webinars, in person lectures, small group presentations to customers and industry partners.

 

Requirements:

    • Understands laboratory methods, demonstrates knowledge of pathological processes with correspondent disease states.
    • Ability to think analytically about project management and troubleshooting histology issues.
    • Experience authoring, implementing, and verifying laboratory procedures.
    • Effective experience teaching at all levels of histology, special stains and IHC.
    • Excellent administration and management skills. The individual identifies and resolves problems in a timely manner, gathers and analyzes information skillfully.  Prioritizes work activities and uses time efficiently.
    • High level written and verbal communication skills. The candidate must be able to communicate clearly and effectively in a variety of different contexts and with appropriate methods.  From coaching with a trainee having a difficult day, to complex and highly detailed technical, procedural or training documents with management staff.
    • Adapts to changes in the work environment, manages competing demands and can deal with frequent change, delay, or unexpected events.
    • Works well under pressure, stays flexible through growth and change.
    • Experience with CAP or Joint Commission laboratory certification.
    • High level functionality with Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook required. Database experience preferred.
    • Management level experience with the interview and hiring process for laboratory positions.
    • Able to adapt to company specific policies and procedures.
